Crime Stoppers Victoria and BankVic have joined forces to launch a new podcast, ‘Defending Your Online Investments’. This podcast was created to tackle the alarming increase in Investment Scams and to prevent future victims.
Australians lost a staggering $292,623,743 to online investment scams in 2023. Despite this alarming loss, many of these scams often go unreported, with only 8,681 reports received by Scamwatch in the same year. This highlights the need for greater awareness and understanding of the issue.
Crime Stoppers Victoria Chief Executive, Stella Smith agrees that it is important for the community to educate themselves through valuable resources such as podcasts, “By Partnering with BankVic, we are able to draw on real life examples that could save people from risking their investments, savings and financial futures,” she said.
The podcast features expert interviews, real-life stories, and practical advice on how to protect your online investments. Episodes will cover topics such as recognising red flags, conducting due diligence, and reporting scams.
Senior Fraud and Anti-Money laundering Consultant from BankVic, Paul Colville explained the importance of podcasts such as this, “No one wants to believe they are capable of falling victim to a scam, but we know from data that just isn’t the case. Protecting our members and the community from financial harm is a top priority and by using real stories will hopefully change start to change people’s attitudes.”
Special guest, Alec Renehan Co-founder of Equity Mates Media explains why this podcast is so timely, “Financial scams are becoming a part of everyday life. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimate that 65% of Australians have been exposed to a scam, so it is becoming more a question of ‘when’ not ‘if’ you will face an attempted scam.
