Most of us have been told to turn on two-factor authentication for our accounts; whether it’s online banking, MyGov or your social media accounts. But what exactly is it, and why does it matter?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your accounts. It means that even if someone gets hold of your password, they still can’t log in without a second step of verification.
That second step might be a code sent to your phone, a prompt on your device, or a code from an authentication app. Think of it like locking your front door and then setting the alarm, two lock are always better than one.
Why does it matter?
Cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to steal personal information. Passwords can be guessed, stolen, or leaked in data breaches, and can also be compromised through phishing scams that trick you into handing them over.
