Farm Security Checklist

Fences and Access Points: Storing Tools and Valuables:

• Check fences and gates often to make sure they are in good condition. Broken fences or gates make it easy for intruders to enter.

• Use locks on gates that are strong and can’t be easily broken.

• Put warning signs on fences and gates to scare off trespassers and show that the area is secure.

• Consider a biosecurity management plan to prevent unauthorised visitors.

  
  

  Lighting and Security Cameras:

• Add sensor lights around your home, sheds, and main entry points to keep these areas well-lit.

• Use light timers in homes and sheds.

• Set up alarms or cameras to keep an eye on your property. Make sure they are working and connected to a phone or security service.

• Place cameras where they can see all important areas, like entry points, sheds and garages.

• Save footage securely so it’s available if something happens.

  
  

  Livestock and Animal Safety:

• Count your livestock often to check for missing animals.

• Use tags, earmarks or brands and NLIS devices to mark your animals. Register these with Agriculture Victoria.

• Lock up tools, machines, and equipment when not in use. Use sheds or storage spaces with strong locks.

• Take keys out of vehicles and machines and store them in a safe spot.

• Take pictures of the contents inside your sheds to help identify items if they’re stolen.

• Engrave or mark tools with a unique marking to assist in the identification of tools.

• Write down details like serial numbers for all valuable items, including tools and machines, to help identify them if stolen.

  
  

  Protecting Fuel and Supplies:

• Try and maintain line of sight to your fuel tanks and always lock them when not in use

• Store chemicals, fertilizers, and other dangerous items in locked areas. Record details like type, batch number, and expiry date.

• Store feed, fodder and seeds appropriately so they are locked and secure to prevent theft and damage’

  
  

  Sheds and Storage Areas:

• Always lock sheds, garages, and other storage spaces when you’re not using them. Use quality locks on all doors and windows.

• Place sheds or storage buildings where you can see them from your home.

• Check locks and security systems often to make sure they are still working well.
