Crime Stoppers and Victoria Police want everyone to get home safely. We know that children require a helping hand to learn safe road practices.
OUR ‘SAFETY FIRST’ GOLDEN RULES
Hold your child’s hand when crossing the road or near traffic.
Ensure your child gets in and out of the car from the footpath/kerbside of the road.
Put away your phone when walking on or around roads and cars.
Meet your child from the same side of the road they are on before crossing together.
Stop at driveways and laneways to ensure no cars are reversing.
BEING ROAD SAFE, TOGETHER
Ask your child simple questions to get them thinking about road safety, such as:
What does that traffic sign mean?
Where is the safest place for us to cross this road at?
What do we need to do before we cross the road together?
What do we look and listen for before we cross the road?
What do we think about before we cross the road?
CHILDREN ON WHEELS
Teach your child to ride their bike away from roads and driveways until you are confident they will stop for any moving vehicles or before any roads.

Supervise your child when riding their bike.
Ensure your child steps off their bike before
crossing the road.
Use safety lights and brightly coloured clothing on cloudy days so others can see you.
Ensure your child wears correctly fitted safety gear like helmets, wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads.
Is it safe to cross this road?
Ask your child to help you check for dangers and brainstorm solutions to any potential risks you may face, such as:
Are we distraction free? Let’s make sure we can see and hear the road clearly.
Are we waiting at a safe distance from the road? Let’s make sure we’re standing two
steps back from the kerb.
Are we visible to cars? Let’s make sure we are in a safe spot to see any traffic travelling down both sides of the road.
Do we see any dangers? Let’s look, listen and think about whether we can see the road and anything dangerous.
Are we safe to keep crossing? Let’s keep actively looking to make sure we’re safe.
