An Australian Fur Seal Pup was found alive in a bin at the Portland RSL Sub-Branch on the 30th of September 2025.
The Seal was transferred to Zoos Victoria marine Response Unit for a veterinary assessment.
Significant penalties apply for being in possession of, feeding or touching seals as this can affect the health and safety of the seal and individuals. Seals and other marine mammals are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. It is illegal to take, be in possession of, feed or touch seals as this can affect the health and safety of the seal and individuals.

Update to the case: After a veterinary assessment, the Australian Fur Seal pup had to be euthanised on welfare grounds.
