Crime Stoppers is seeking any information from the public regarding an Eastern Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttatus) found in a Hastings backyard, along Hodgins Road, between Marine Parade and Victoria Street.

The exotic snake was located and reported to authorities on Sunday, 13 of September 2020. According to witness reports, there had been numerous sightings of a white snake loose in the area several months prior to its capture.

Although the adult snake was found with several superficial injuries, it is suspected the albino reptile had been kept in captivity prior to its escape and is presumed to have been someone’s pet.

The Eastern Corn Snake is an exotic pest animal, and it is illegal for members of the public to import, keep, breed, trade or release them in Victoria. Eastern Corn Snakes pose one of the greatest threats to biodiversity as they have the potential to establish in Victoria and predate upon and spread disease to our native wildlife. As a result of illegal possession and trade, the Eastern Corn Snake has been discovered in all states of Australia, having either escaped or being deliberately released.

If anyone has information about this animal or any other exotic species of reptile in Victoria, please make a confidential report to Crime Stoppers.
