Call it Out campaign

Thursday, 17 September 2020

Crime Stoppers Victoria with Victoria Police are encouraging the Sunraysia community to report suspicious or criminal activity with the launch of the ‘Call it Out’ campaign.

Crime Stoppers’ ‘Call it Out’ campaign will be launched with Victoria Police on Thursday, 17 September 2020.

Police in Mildura have noted an increase in people calling and reporting suspicious behaviour as a result of staying home and paying more attention to unusual activity in their communities. Calls to Crime Stoppers in the last three months have increased 24% from the start of the year. Stella Smith, Chief Executive of Crime Stoppers Victoria, says it is encouraging to see so many people taking action against crime by sharing what they know. “No-one should be silenced by crime. Crime Stoppers encourages people to speak out and to feel safe while doing so.”

Safeguard Your Community campaign

Wednesday, 19 August 2020

Crime Stoppers Victoria is encouraging people to ‘safeguard their community’ by reporting criminals involved in suspicious burglary activity.
The Crime Stoppers’ campaign ‘Safeguard your community’ will be launched with Victoria Police on Wednesday, 19 August 2020.

The campaign is a reminder for individuals to lock up and secure their property. Chief Executive of Crime Stoppers Victoria, Stella Smith says the campaign is also a reminder for the public to share what they know with Crime Stoppers.

“While coronavirus might be invisible to the naked eye, criminal activity is not. Aggravated burglaries are occurring in the City of Greater Geelong and we want help from the public to catch the offenders of these serious crimes. We want anyone with information to know they can contact Crime Stoppers; they don’t need to tell us who they are, we don’t use caller ID and we don’t trace IP addresses.”

According to Crime Statistics Agency Victoria, 277 residential aggravated burglary offences occurred in the Geelong area, for the year ending March 2020. This was an increase of 42 offences or 17.9% from the previous twelve months.

Crime Stoppers is asking the public to ‘Know the Signs’ and report suspicious drug manufacturing

Tuesday, 30 June 2020

Crime Stoppers Victoria is asking people to speak up and disrupt the manufacture and supply of illegal substances in their local community.
Working with Victoria Police, Crime Stoppers will launch the ‘Know the Signs and Report Suspicious Drug Manufacturing’ campaign in Shepparton on Tuesday, 30 June 2020.

The campaign encourages Victorians to report suspicious drug manufacture activity by identifying signs of cannabis crop houses or clandestine drug laboratories.

The use of cannabis in the Greater Shepparton area is a public safety and health concern for police as well as the local community.

Crime data from the Shepparton Police Service Area identified 200 offenders charged with cannabis offences between May 2019 and May 2020.

Research shows 1 in 5 Australians turn a blind eye to crime

Monday, 18 May 2020

An independent national survey commissioned by Crime Stoppers Australia has revealed as many as 1 in 5 Australians choose to turn a blind eye to unsolved crime and suspicious activity rather than speaking out – with another 1 in 3 survey respondents preferring to share information with family or friends rather than authorities.

While over half of respondents said they were prepared to speak up, those who wouldn’t said they were held back because of personal concerns (79%) – primarily because they didn’t want to get involved or were concerned for their own safety and feared repercussions.

The results have concerned the nation’s preeminent information service, which is using National Crime Stoppers Day on Monday 18th May to urge all Australians to play a part in building a safer community by sharing with Crime Stoppers what they know, without having to say who they are.

Crime Stoppers Victoria is asking the public to dob in drug drivers

Thursday, 9 April 2020

Crime Stoppers Victoria is asking Victoria’s road users to ‘take the driver’s’ seat’ and report drug-driving information.

Crime Stoppers Victoria will launch, ‘Take Drug Driving off the Road’ a road safety campaign in partnership with Victoria Police on Thursday, 9 April 2020.

The campaign aims to STOP road users from driving after taking drugs. Drug driving is a serious road safety issue in regional Victoria and this campaign sets to help road users identify and report suspicious drug-driving behaviour.

In the last five years approximately 41% of all drivers and motorcyclists killed who were tested, had drugs in their system, with cannabis and stimulants the most common substances detected.

One in four Victorians who use drugs admit to driving under the influence of recreational drugs. This doesn’t just put them at risk but puts every single road user at risk of road trauma and fatality.

Crime Stoppers has joined forces with the eSafety Commissioner in rolling out a national child protection campaign.

Monday, 30 March 2020

The new campaign seeks to help combat child sexual abuse and unwanted contact online.

Today’s launch follows the highly successful pilot campaign in NSW last year which contributed towards a 62% increase in complaints about child sexual abuse material to eSafety. In addition, there was a 5% increase in the number of contacts made to Crime Stoppers specifically about online child abuse.

Information received during the NSW pilot has already resulted in several apprehensions and new investigations.

In launching the joint awareness initiative, CEO of Crime Stoppers Victoria, Stella Smith, said the national campaign has been designed to better educate people about the need to be on the lookout for and prevent child sexual abuse material and unwanted contact online.

“There is no doubt that child sexual abuse material is rife on the internet, so it is more important than ever for parents and caregivers to be aware of the real and present dangers faced by children when they spend time online,” Ms Smith said.

“Predators are gaining increased access to children online through a range of popular apps, games and social media sites to solicit sexual images or video, or harm them physically. We want everyone to be vigilant and if you suspect or see something related to online child sexual abuse then report it immediately so action can be taken.”
